Learn how to release hypertension

HYPERTENSION, or high blood pressure, is called the “silent killer” because sufferers really experience symptoms. Yet, it kills millions of people every year. You can feel perfectly fine until you visit your doctor for a regular check-up.

The Malaysian Society of Hypertension announced last month that some 43 per cent of Malaysians aged over 30 have high blood pressure. Analysis shows that Malays make up 34 per cent, followed by the Chinese (32 per cent) and Indians (29 per cent).

There are dozens of reasons why your blood pressure might be too high. One common cause is ageing. Other factors include eating too much salt, not exercising enough, smoking, eating too much saturated fat, obesity, drinking too much alcohol, and some illnesses such as diabetes. Temporary hypertension can also be caused by pregnancy, taking certain types of medicines and fever.

If you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, treatment depends very much on the root cause. Your doctor may prescribe special medications or simply a change in diet and exercise.

If high blood pressure runs in the family, you can take preventative care by keeping a low-fat diet, and by monitoring the amount of salt and MSG in your diet.
